System 7.0 Tips and Warnings Apple's new System 7.0 brings some changes to MacPassword as well as some warnings. If you are using MacPassword™ with System 7.0… please read this section thoroughly. Hint Starting with System 7.0, Apple has built in the ability to bypass all extension loading (MacPassword™ is an extension) by holding down the Shift key during startup. Starting with MacPassword™ v3.8.9. there is a new option in the "Virus, Sounds and Other" screen that will allow you to turn off this "feature" of the System. Hint Make sure you have installed MacPassword™ according to the special installation instructions as noted above (eg. install only into the Extensions folder). If you follow the instructions for System 6.x.x, MacPassword™ will not work. Warning At this time MacPassword™ is only compatible with Virtual Memory if you do not use the “Lock Protected Volumes” option. A future version of MacPassword™ will address this issue. Warning Do not select aliases to folders in the folder selection dialog as MacPassword will not be able to expand them properly at this time. A future version of MacPassword™ will address this issue. Warning In the past, you could just move MacPassword™ out of the System folder to effectively disable its protection. Now, you MUST turn it off properly as the Alias Mgr will locate it wherever you've placed it and the MacPassword shutdown code to lock up your Macintosh will be able to execute. This will place you in the position of having to use the Utility utility to recover your hard drive. Hint Make sure that you only use v3.9.2 or later of the MacPassword™ Utility under System 7.x.x. Hint Protection characteristics under System 7.0 have changed now to reflect differences in this new operating system. When “High Level Protection” is on under 7.0, the folders will be invisible in the Finder's windows as well as within the Standard Get/Put file dialog. Under System 6.0, the folder is greyed out. The 7.0 Finder's “find” command will not be able to search within protected folders.
